Semaglutide belongs to a class of FDA-approved medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. These glucagon ''like'' peptides imitate hormones naturally produced in your body to control your blood sugar. They stimulate insulin release in your pancreas while also keeping it from releasing another hormone called glucagon, which works together with insulin to regulate your blood sugar levels. Originally formulated for type 2 diabetics it was discovered that at higher doses, significant weight loss occurs. It does so by acting on a part of the brain called the hypothalamus causing satiety(feeling full after a meal) & it lessens hunger. Cravings for sugar & Carbohydrates are reduced. It has also been shown in clinical trials to burn harmful visceral fat & been shown to be cardioprotective.
It is important to use this medication in conjunction with lifestyle intervention. What this medicine does is help patients adhere to a reduced-calorie diet. With obesity, you always need lifestyle changes plus medicine.
The treatment begins with a very low dose of Semaglutide that is administered subcutaneously (virtually pain-free) once weekly. This small dose allows the body to acclimate to the Semaglutide decreasing the chances of some of the gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea/bloating. This is why it make several weeks until you see the full impact of the Semaglutide as we gradually increase the dose every 4 weeks (patience required).
1 to 2 pounds a week is a healthy weight loss goal on this medication. We do not encourage fast weight loss or exceeding 2 pounds a week. Therefore 8 pounds a month is a realistic & healthy goal.
